CONSTITUTION OF THE MARYLAND/DC/NOVA CHAPTER

OF THE AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF TEACHERS OF GERMAN

ARTICLE  I.    NAME

            The name of the chapter shall be the Maryland/DC/NOVA Chapter of the American Association of Teachers of German.

ARTICLE II.    PURPOSE

            The purpose of the Chapter conforms to that of the National Organization.  It proposes to promote and improve the teaching of German in the geographic area covered by this chapter and to encourage a spirit of cooperation and fellowship among its members.

ARTICLE III.   MEMBERSHIP AND DUES

1.   Any teacher of German, any graduate or undergraduate student, and anyone interested in the teaching of German may join the Chapter and the National Association upon payment of annual dues as specified by the by-laws of the National Association.

2.   Membership in the Maryland/DC/NOVA Chapter is contingent on membership in the National Association.

3.      Chapter membership dues are included in the National AATG dues.

4.   The Board of Directors of the Maryland/DC/NOVA Chapter also determines an additional amount that members of this Chapter are required to pay annually.  The annual amount is currently $ 5.00.

ARTICLE IV.  OFFICERS, NOMINATING COMMITTEE, AND ELECTIONS

  1. The officers of the Chapter are the President, the Vice President, the Secretary, and the Treasurer.
  1. Elections shall be conducted in the spring of every other year.
  1. The Board of Directors shall serve as the nominating committee and present a slate of officers to the membership.
  1. The slate of officers shall be published on the Web at least three weeks prior to the date of the election.
  1. Elections shall be by ballots mailed to all Chapter members.

ARTICLE V.   BOARD OF DIRECTORS

  1. The Chapter shall be administered by the Board of Directors.
  1. The Board of Directors shall consist of the
    1. elected officers provided for in Section IV;
    2. testing chair appointed by the National Organization;
    3. at least six (6) representatives from public school systems, private and parochial schools, colleges and universities, and any other persons from the community interested in German.
  1. The Board of Directors shall meet at least two times a year.
  1. The members present shall constitute a quorum.

ARTICLE VI.   MEETINGS

  1. The Chapter shall meet at least two times a year.
  1. The time and place for the Chapter meetings will be determined by the President after consultation with the Board of Directors.
  1. The members present shall constitute a quorum.
ARTICLE VII.   CHANGES TO THE CONSTITUTION

1.   The Constitution of the Chapter may be amended by a two-thirds vote of Board members present at any regular meeting.

2.       Amendments may be proposed by the Board of Directors or by written notice to the Board of Directors by at least four members of the Chapter no later than two months in advance of the meeting at which action is to be taken.

ARTICLE  VIII.  BY-LAWS

By-laws may be adopted or changed at any scheduled meeting of the Chapter by a majority of the members present, provided that written notice of the proposed change(s) has been sent to the members at least thirty days prior to such meeting.
